
Cable and Cable-Net Reinforced Membranes

The permissible stresses of membranes are limited. If these limits are exceeded, cable or cable nets can be used as reinforcements. These cables can, for example, be fixed to the membrane in a cable pocket or slide freely on the membrane. In both cases, we obtain identical forces in the entire cable - if the weight of the cables is disregarded. We obtain the same behaviour with cable nets, whereby identical forces are produced in the cables between the net nodes. This article first presents the theory of the free sliding of a cable over the membrane surface, whereby the lifting of the cables is also possible. Examples are used to show how it is handled in practice. With free cables or cable nets, correct placement on the surface of the membrane is of crucial importance. The “weightless" cables should follow a geodesic line, as this is the only way to ensure that the cable presses on the surface in such a way that it can absorb the force. If cable nets are used, an equidistant net should be used for production reasons. Examples of how to create these nets on the membrane surface of an air dome are shown.
