Dresden Central Station, inaugurated in 1898, had been substantially overhauled following the architectural vision and design of Sir Norman Foster in the years 2006/2007. During this transition the roof had been given a PTFE/glass membrane cover. A lot of influencing factors during engineering, production and installation at that time, as well as problems with ice and snow have triggered the necessity to do a comprehensive renovation on this roof cover, again. Deficiencies in existing design have been considered and improved solutions found. This incorporated the material specifics of the PTFE glass membrane, imperfections of the supporting steel structure and the behaviour of snow and ice in winter. Additional elements like skylights have been incorporated and the strengthening of support that they have triggered. This paper will talk about advanced means and measures to avoid any damage to the membrane material during fabrication, transport and installation. Challenges of the logistic preparation, resulting from the central position of the building, from the railway station being in operation 24/7 and works having partly to be done in breaks of traffic will be presented. This included accessibility by cranes for all loads and the consideration of existing buildings underground. Strict schedules for breaks of traffic and requirements of passengers moving through the station required meticulous time scheduling and BIM methods, e.g. for the scaffolding. The works have been done in a phased process during the years 2023-2025. This project features modern membrane construction technologies in historical buildings, showcasing the potential durability of textile membranes as sustainable roofing material. Last but not least it is about a capable contractor being able to handle the required logistics, to deliver quality products, fabrication and installation, and to respect requirements and time schedules of the client, the DB Deutsche Bahn AG.
