The Avicii Arena retractable ceiling is an advanced adaptive membrane structure designed to enhance the venue’s acoustic performance and functionality. The system features a lightweight acoustic membrane mounted on aluminum frame panels, guided by motorized trolleys and chain drives. Controlled via an advanced software interface, the roof can transition from fully open to fully closed in less than 10 minutes, covering a maximum distance of approximately 60 meters in the longest bay. The project’s modular design ensures adaptability, while preventive maintenance procedures maintain system integrity. This case study highlights the design, manufacturing, and installation process, emphasizing the challenges overcome, key innovations, and lessons learned from modernizing an existing venue.
